How to Tune the Tenor Banjo
The Tenor Banjo is tuned in fifths, like the Viola or Tenor Mandola. The strings are numbered from one to four, the largest being the 4th or C string and the smallest the A or first string. Tune the 4th or C string to middle C on the piano, place the second finger (left hand) at the 7th fret and tune the G or 3rd string in unison, place the same finger on G or 3rd string at the 7th fret and tune the D or second string in unison, place the same finger at the 7th fret on the D string and tune the A or first string in unison. When a piano is not available, tune the 4* string to a "C" pitch pipe. When properly tuned the four open strings on the banjo will correspond with the piano as illustrated below. Tenor Banjo |
